The 1500 horsepower EMD FP7 was built between 1949 and 1953. It was a lengthened F7 freight locomotive, with four extra feet for water storage and a steam generator. With these additions, the FP7 could serve as both a freight and passenger locomotive. Several railroads ran this unit over the EMD passenger locomotive of the time, the E7, because of its superior performance in mountainous terrain. The F7B was built at the same time and was a cabless booster of the F7 freight locomotive. It was often used with both the F7A and FP7 locomotives in both passenager and freight service.
