Available On: June 1, 2005

Transporting over the road trailers and wagons by rail has had a long history that stretches back to the late nineteenth century. Following the Second World War, the TOFC business began to come into its own as railroads worked to compete with over the road truckers. These efforts took the form of converting standard flat cars to accept the then-standard 25? trailer. These early experiments in intermodal transportation have grown into the robust trailer and container business that the railroads enjoy today.
