In 1967 the Evans company started making double plug door 50' boxcars. Besides one series of GB&W (built 8-1967), all were RBLs. Insulated and having loaders (mainly Evans Products) they filled a unique niche in the market for a wider opening flush fitting door, typically called plug doors. I believe this was a reaction in the market for wider doored entrance for palletized or large pallet loads that were forklift into the cars. Most loads started as lumber product loadings like of plywood, masonite or perhaps wallboard. Evans Products had a subdivision that made and shipped plywood products, so perhaps that was the spark for this design.
The information is sketchy for the next phase of production of this car design. Both ACF and USRE companies in 1968 started to make this same car design with almost identical features. I'm not sure if these were produced via a sub-contractor basis or Evans could not complete the cars in house and parceled them out to other shops. Even though the design is generally the same, one variation had crept into the design. The design was produced with overhanging roofs (typical for normal insulated cars) and also non-overhanging roofs. Moloco will be producing both of these versions. There is no clear-cut reason for this design change and I can't think of a reason for either/or.
