Following nine years of continuous production, the Pullman-Standard 4750cf covered hopper was the largest mass-produced covered hopper design in North American railcar history. After Pullman-Standard’s demise in 1981, Trinity Industries acquired the design and production rights for the “Pullman-version” of the 4750 design (which killed Trinity’s own 4750 from the catalog). Shippers wanted the “Pullman-design” 4750 to be offered again! Produced between 1988 and 1995, Trinity produced the “Pullman-design” 4750 and met customer needs for this popular covered hopper. During that production period, Trinity made a series of refinements to the design. Many Class I railroads purchased the Trinity 4750, with BN, UP, and CSX ordering them in the thousands. Trinity 4750 cars continue to serve Class I, short line, and in lessee services today, hauling grains, fertilizer, salt, and other bulk commodities.
The Tangent Trinity 4750 is a state of the art, dimensionally-accurate scale replica with highly accurate “true-to-life” colors and precise letter stencils. This isn’t a “one size fits all” model – Tangent Scale Models have tooled all of the phases of these cars! Tangent Scale Models Trinity 4750 system of models offers a multitude of detail variations and phases to replicate the different Trinity offerings as the car design evolved. Example variations include: riveted and welded body parts, brake systems, outlet gates, roof hatches, jacking pads, brakewheel housings, brakewheels, etc. Tangent Scale Models replicas include their fine “near-scale” draft gear box with beautifully-rendered side “key” detail. Tangent Scale Models ready-to-operate replica is finished with coupler lift bars accompanying Kadee scale couplers and sufficient hidden weights to ensure the model operates as good as it looks. At more than 100 parts per car, not to mention phase accurate details, genuine Kadee couplers, and all-metal wheels, Tangent Scale Models provide you with a high-value-for-your-dollar model that will provide you with years of enjoyment and curb-appeal.
A quick synopsis of Tangent Scale Models Trinity Industries “Pullman-Design” 4750 scale replicas include:
– Union Pacific (UP) “Delivery 1993” is an exciting offering for us, because Union Pacific was a large user of the Trinity 4750 as well. Union Pacific ordered these cars in a more neutral gray than previous covered hopper purchases – not the typical, darker, “Harbor Mist” gray. The cars have the distinctive UP shield in the center of the car that screams 1990s UP painting practices. Tangent Scale Models call these cars “Version 4” Trinity Pullman-Design 4750s, and they continue with the Trinity variations found on earlier prototypes, notably the changeover in jacking pad design to one that is less long horizontally, and with an oval-shaped attachment hole in the center. These Trinity 4750s include the “bolt on” outlet gate design that was found on some of the Trinity 4750 prototypes, however they do not include shaker brackets on the outlet bays! Up on the roof of the cars you will find unpainted galvanized “slope up” US Morton-design running boards which also include end supports, and the galvanized steel trough hatches that Trinity applied are replicated on Tangent Scale Model. Every railroad had different hatches, and UP is no exception. The ends of the cars include a truck-brake system design, Universal 9300 brake housing, tube-style defect card holder, and straight-handle coupler lift bars, all of which are accurately modeled on Tangent Scale Models replicas. Underneath the cars, the centersill dividers have access holes in them like they should. On the side of the cars, the UP requested a distinctive and different AEI tag that was angled downward, presumably for better car reads. These cars carrying this UP paint scheme were from a grouping of 1,800 cars purchased from Trinity Industries. The first 12 road numbers carry October 1993 build dates, whereas the second 12 road numbers carry November 1993 build dates.
