The three railroads that make up the Chessie System were closely linked since the early 1960's: Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O),Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), and the Western Maryland Railway (WM) operated as Chessie System from 1973-1987. The C&Osleeping kitten advertising campaign from the 1930's became the inspiration for the Chessie System logo. In 1980 Chessie System
merged with Seaboard Coast Line Industries to become CSX Corporation. The Chessie logo continued to be applied to new and re-painted equipment through 1986, when CSXT introduced its own paint scheme.
