Historic information about the prototype: The ALCO PA-1's mighty 16-cylinder turbo-diesel produced 2,000 horsepower that was transmitted to the outer axles of the three-axle trucks. The center axles helped distribute the total weight of 140 tons. A total of 250 units of the PA-1 were built between 1946 and 1950. The Union Pacific bought eight units as the class 600 for passenger service and converted them in 1955 for freight train service by changing the driving gear. In 1964 these units were retired, and one unit was kept in service until 1968 as an experimental locomotive.
