These Maintenance of Way cars were painted a simple light grey, and served Southern Pacific repair and maintenance trains. Southern Pacific was a Class 1 railroad from 1865 until 1996, when it was absorbed by Union Pacific after falling on hard times financially in the 1970s and 1980s.

Southern Pacific utilized older freight and passenger cars giving them a new lease on life. This set features a converted sleeper, diner and ex-horse/baggage car painted SP MOW gray. They represent the typical remotely deployed boarding train found system wide providing living and work space as necessary. Most were gradually replaced with more modern light weight cars stricken from mainline service.
