Digitrax - Mobile Decoder DCC - Premium Wired Installation and BMEF - 1.25 Amp/2 Amp Peak (This decoder can also be used on N & HO locos) (SKU 245-DZ143)

  Digitrax

All Digitrax decoders are rated for at least 1 amp for robust operation and long-term reliability. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit in almost any locomotive, Digitrax offers both traditional wired decoders as well as plug n play decoders that make installation a snap.

Digitrax decoders feature variable frequency Supersonic(TM) motor drive for quiet motor operation. They support all DCC standard programming methods. One-step decoder factory reset makes it easy to troubleshoot decoders. Motor isolation protection protects your investment in locos and decoders. Digitrax decoders support both two and four digit addressing and basic, advanced and universal consisting. They also have operations mode read-back capability so you can read back programming information while the decoder is on the main line.
Digitrax decoders are DCC compatible and can be used with any DCC compatible system.

Recommended Digitrax Decoder - Z-scale:

  • MicroTrains -- Z Scale Diesel Locomotives

Recommended Digitrax Decoder - N-scale:

  • Arnold -- S-2
  • Atlas -- RS-1; RS-3; VO1000
  • Athearn -- P59PHI
  • Bachmann -- Doodlebug; 2-8-2; F7 A&B
  • Kato -- Mikado
  • InterMountain -- FT (with frame modification)
  • LifeLike -- Alco S-1 Switcher; 2-8-8-2 Mallet; FA1/FB1; F7; F40PH; GP18;GP20; GP38-2; SD7; SW1200
  • Roundhouse -- 2-8-0
  • Most N scale Steam --
  •  Other N scale Locos --

*For N scale applications there are replacement frames available for many popular locomotives.

These frames use DN121, DN142 or DZ143 decoders. For N scale applications most modern high efficiency can motors draw less than 1/2 amp when running and less than 3/4 amp when stalled at 12 V DC. However, we have found that many Kato N-scale locos actually draw more than this when properly tested. Therefore, we recommend the DN121, DN142, or DZ143 or other 1 amp decoder with these locos. Using decoders that are rated for at least 1 amp in N scale operations has proven to be the most reliable solution over the long term.

Basic Digitrax Decoder Recommended - HO-scale:

  • Athearn -- SD70; SD75; SD80; GP60; Genesis Light Mikado 2-8-2; Genesis Light Mikado 4-6-2

Premium Digitrax Decoder Recommended - HO-scale:

  • Atlas -- AEM7; S-2; S-4
  • Bachmann -- Spectrum 3-Truck Shay; Spectrum Steam Engines
  • Kato -- NW-2
  • LifeLike -- SW8/ 900/ 600
  • Walthers -- All Locos

For HO applications, most modern high efficiency can motors draw less than 1/2 amp when running and less than 1 amp when stalled at 12V DC. These motors are suitable for use with 1.5 amp (DH163, DH121, DH150 plug n'play decoders), or 1 amp (DN142, DN121, or DZ143) decoders.

Note: Some older HO motor designs (older Athearn open frame motors, Pittman motors, etc.) may exceed the 1.0 amp limit and you may need to use a 1.5 amp. 2.0 amp or other higher current decoder such as the 3.0 amp DG380L in these applications.
