The series Kiha 201 was introduced in 1997 as a diesel railcar that can be operated without hindrance of high-speed rail schedules. The structure of the series Kiha 201 allows for coordinated operation with the series 731 Ishikari Liner - a commuting electric AC train.

Series 201 Kiha “Niseko Liner” and Series 731 “Ishikari Liner” are commuting in the Sapporo suburban area.
