CANADIAN STEAM 1958
This 1958 journey to the Canadian Prairies features a wealth of Canadian Pacific, and Canadian National variety. You'll see mixed trains, freights, and passenger trains, all steam hauled on mainlines and branchlines. You'll visit places like Broadview, Virden, Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, the Morris Branch, Minnedosa and many others. Famous engines like CP Royal Hudson #2860, and CN 4-8-2 #6060 are also seen in regular service.
This second tape in the vintage Canada Steam series features a 1958 trip as photographer Maynard Laing and friends headed to the prairies of Canada for steam action. Elwin Purington was along recording audio, and many 16mm film scenes have the exact authentic audio, making this a rare treat indeed.
We enjoy scenes in the Winnipeg area including Searle, and St. James Tower, and watch a CN 4-6-0 #1361 on the branchline to Morris. Also see a CN passenger train the Virden branchline, and scattered CP activity further west with a couple of G5 pacifics. We also visit Portage la Prairie and see several scenes of a doubleheader with two G3 4-6-2's including a neat pacing scene at 50 mph where they meet another G3 freight train at speed, and all with authentic audio.
There are also some scenes east of Winnipeg including a mixed train, and pacing the Port Arthur train with CN 4-8-2 #6061 in the early evening. More scenes at Portage la Prairie and various locations near Winnipeg abound, before we head west. A memorable sequence is recorded at Minnedosa with a CP meet, followed by a helper on the front and rear of a freight that is chased eastbound up the grade.
There are several CN 4-8-2s including a shot of the famous 6060 without the nosecone. A famous CP Royal Hudson # 2860 is also seen in regular service as well.
Locomotives seen on the Canadian National include 4-6-0, 2-8-0, 2-8-2, 4-6-2, 2-10-2, and 4-8-2. Canadian Pacific locomotives include 4-6-0, 4-6-2, 2-8-0, 2-8-2, 2-10-2, and 4-6-4. These are truly historic steam treasures that will be enjoyed by all steam and historic railroad enthusiasts, and the fact that many scenes have exact audio is quite remarkable for films this old.
