Prior to the 1970's, livestock was often shipped in stock cars to packing plants throughout the country. The typical stock car was based upon a box car designs modified with open slat sides. Some also had internal decking for smaller  animals. Originally developed to transporting cows and pigs, early stock cars date back to the 1860's. Some stock cars could carry up to 20,000 pounds. By the 1980's, stock car use was rare due to a combination of cost, safety and more economical reefer transport by rail or truck.
