Since 2012, TrinityRail has built thousands of 31,000 Gallon Crude Oil Tank Cars to meet the growing needs of the oil industry. Mile-long unit trains with 100+ cars crisscross the United States and Canada daily to deliver crude from the oil fields of North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana to refineries on the East, Gulf and West Coasts. The TrinityRail tank car is easy recognizable by its unique trapezoid-shaped end shields.

In mid-2013, TrinityRail built 142 tank cars numbered SCMX 6500 through 6519 for Shell Oil Company.

The ScaleTrains model of this car is completely new from the rails up with state of the art development and production. To meet the needs of modelers, the cars are available in two detail levels. Operator level cars are a fully functional, minimally detailed with plastic parts and economically priced way to own these cars while the Rivet Counter versions represent the highest level of detail available in modeling today with many separately applied detail parts. The Operator level car is available in 12 road numbers, which the Rivet Counter car is available is 24 road numbers different than the Operator level cars and is also available as an unnumbered car.
