Santa Fe had 800 of these hoppers acquired in four batches between 1964 and ’67. After many years of applying rather mundane paint schemes to their hopper car fleet, at the dawn of the 1970s Santa Fe finally began applying their proud name to the sides of these cars. In addition to coal from mines in New Mexico, these cars were also used to haul coke, aggregate, ore and even basalt used for landscaping.
