CSX came together in stages over a seven year period. The Chessie System Railroads holding company merged with Seaboard Coast Line Industries holding company to create the CSX holding company in November of 1980. The nine Class One railroads under CSX remained officially separate entities until the last week of 1982 when SCL and L&N were merged to form Seaboard System with Clinchfield, Georgia, Atlanta & West Point and Western of Alabama following over the next month. A few months later, Western Maryland was merged into Baltimore & Ohio. In July of 1986, Seaboard System was re-named CSX Transportation and the first CSXT painted equipment began to appear. In April of ’87, B&O merged into Chesapeake & Ohio and four months later, C&O was merged into CSXT. In the CSX era, these cars could often be found in stone service or even hauling discarded railroad ties. “Stone” loads are included on this run.
