Woodchip hoppers could be purpose built, or adapted from existing designs for coal hoppers. Often converted coal cars would have extended sides that were either made of wood, or in more complete conversions, steel. The higher sides and subsequent higher capacity of these cars was made possible by the much lighter weight of woodchips compared to coal.
