In the 1970’s, FMC introduced their 50’ FMC Double Door Boxcar to railroads who were adding large numbers of new cars to replace aging fleets and to the growing pool and lease fleets. These cars were purchased by a number of railroads and lease operators. The double doors these cars feature allow for faster loading and unloading, as well as for larger loads than single door boxcars could handle. Today, these cars can be seen on even more railroads through sales and mergers.
