As deposits of high grade iron ore were exhausted, the steel industry turned to more abundant, but less concentrated iron taconite deposits. These 70 ton ore cars were developed to replace the earlier 50 versions in use. From the 1940's these types of cars have been used in the transport of taconite iron ore. Often seen in long unit trains, some of these cars were still in use in the early 2000's.
