Mechanical Reefers were a great advance in the transport of perishable goods. Gone was the expensive and time consuming process of loading ice in reefers over the course of their travels to keep good cool. With mechanical reefers, goods were also kept at more consistent temperatures and arrived at their destination in better condition.

These 50 ft exterior post reefers were used by railroads and producers alike and could be seen in many different schemes across North America from the 1950's to the 1980's. Time and the need for more capacity overtook these cars with the introduction of 57 ft and more recently, 64 ft reefers.
