At the outset of World War 2 B&O had plans to replace their aging steam fleet for shinny new FT?s. However, because of a ruling by the War Production Board, they were only limited to 24 draw bared units in A-B-B-A sets. Even so, they were the first major Eastern road to embrace dieselization of its passenger service. One of the more colorful roads, the B&O FT?s were decorated in blue and gray with black and gold horizontal bands. Some were later modified with larger number boards and F style grilles before being retired in 1962.
