Hoppers have played an important part of railroading since the early days. An improvement over gondolas, they allow the transport and easy unloading of many commodities such as coal, sand, rock, sulfur and many more. Types and sizes of these cars have continued to increase as time has passed. The Pennsylvania Railroad being a huge mover of coal developed a number of versions of these cars. In many cases, cars developed by the Pennsylvania Railroad were used by other railroads, either purchased new or when the PRR sold them.
