ATH-GEN-LOGO

EMD introduced the GP40-2 as an updated version of the GP40 in 1972 along with other models in the Dash 2 line. These second generation locomotives featured more modern electronic control systems. The 645E3 16 cylinder prime mover generates 3000 horsepower.

While not produced in as large numbers as it's fellow, the GP38-2 or the SD40-2, more than 1100 were built between 1972 & 1986 when it was phased out of production. Along the way, there were a number of interesting versions produced by both EMD in the United States and GMD in Canada.

These included the GP40-2W built for Canadian Nation and Go Transit that features a wide safety cab, the GP40P-2 built for passenger service with Southern Pacific and the GP40-2L built for Canadian National & Go Transit, the majority of which feature higher and lighten frames to allow for larger fuel tanks.

Today, many of these locomotives continue on with original owners and secondary owners. With no new 4 axle locomotives being produced by either EMD or GE, rebuilds of the these and other 4 axle locomotives will ensure their continued presences on the rails of North America for decades to come.
