The SDP45 was developed in the late 1960's and is basically a SD45 with an extended frame to allow for the placement of a steam generator at the rear of the locomotive for passenger service. They initially were generally intended for passenger service, but Erie Lakawana used theirs for freight. As Amtrak took over passenger service, some units were used by Amtrak, while others were used in commuter service. These locomotives eventually left passenger service completely and finished their careers in the early 1990's in freight service. Today, there are few of these locomotives left intact.
