One of Dole's major product lines is bananas, and marketing banana's is not as easy as it may seem. They need to be grown and transported long distances to your local store. And as a perishable and delicate item, there is a good deal of spoilage and waste in a product that only has a shelf life of a few days.

Another issue is the "appearance" of banana's on the store shelf. Do you buy the long and lean banana's, or the short stumpy ones? As it turns out the "stumpy ones" are from the bottom of the 5 ft tall bunch of banana's that grows on the tree's, and it is sweeter than the long and lean bananas that are further up the bunch.

But the stumpy ones are more often than not the ones that stay unsold and thrown away by the store.

Someone at Dole's came up with an idea in the early 1980's to market these short sweet bananas to be the ideal size for packing in a child's lunch box, and started to market them as such using a newly created cartoon character named "Bobby Banana".

They even charged a slightly higher premium price for them and the waste problem disappeared quickly. As part of their marketing plan, they started to decorate many of their containers with "Bobby Banana" cartoon images.
