Ath SD40-2 FURX 3004 (SKU 140-8005)
The demand for large fleets of lease locomotives started in the late 1980?s and continues. The demand has shifted from the original need for locomotives in almost any shape to a need for reliable units. Some new units have been built to satisfy that need, but most lease fleet units are either lease returns in good working order (mostly SD40-2?s) or older units that have been completely rebuilt to SD40-2 standards. First Union Rail (FURX) became active in the locomotive leasing business in 2000 when it contracted with Alstom to have fifty SD40?s and SD40-2?s rebuilt for lease service. These units came from a variety of sources. They emerged from rebuilding painted in a green and silver scheme and numbered 3000 ? 3049. The units were leased to CSX, but have shown up in all parts of the country in run through and horsepower payback service. Three additional units 3050 ? 3052 were rebuilt by Canadian Pacific and leased by them. Our Ready-to-Roll model is FURX 3004, one of five SD40-2?s in the fifty Alstom rebuilt FURX units. It was built as CP Rail 5571, part of CP Rail?s first order of SD40-2?s, in February 1972 by General Motors Diesel Division (EMD?s Canadian subsidiary) as their builder?s number A2570.
