Covered hoppers were an improvement over open hoppers and gondolas. Used primarily for goods that can be damaged by water, or that can be blown by winds, there are many types carrying a wide variety of materials. The 37 ft 2980 Cubic Foot 2 Bay Covered Hopper design was introduced in the late 1980's and many examples of this car are in service and operated by a wide variety of railroads and private operators today.
