Boxcars have been central to the transport of cargo by railroads since the beginning. Carrying any kind of product imaginable over time, they continue to play an important role even in the modern age of intermodal containers. Over the years there have been many different types of cars. These PS 5227 cu ft boxcars were among the first to be developed for and used by the railcar leasing industry in the late 1970’s. Used most widely by Railbox initially, they were seen all over North America. Since then, many other companies have used them as well, either buying them new, or acquiring them second hand. Many of these cars remain in service today.
