The C430 is a four axle, 3000 horsepower ALCo locomotive built as part of the "Century" Series. Unfortunately for ALCo, the end was near and sales were poor with only 16 units produced between 1966 and 1968. Even with so few units manufactured, these reliable units have gone on to serve a surprising number of railroads over the years and some remain in service today, over forty years after they were made.

According to an article in "Diesel Era", the Rock Island placed an order for 10 C430's (S.O. 21278 for 10 units to the Rock Island) This order was canceled prior to ALCo closing its plant. This paint scheme represents Rock Island's intentions had they purchased the C430.
