As the populations grew and the distance between where food was grown or produced, and where it was needed grew, so did the need for efficient transportation of the goods. The railroads were the key to making this happen and used a variety of cars to meet the needs. These included reefers, boxcars and stock cars. Stock cars were used for the transport of livestock, such as pigs, cows and chickens among others. These cars were used for many years with some being used well into the 1970's.
