Pullman-Standard PS-2CD 4000 cubic foot covered hopper - Summary:
The PS-2CD 4000 was the first covered hopper larger than 4000 cubic feet in size, which was an engineering achievement when first released in 1962. . Pullman produced this version of the 4000 from 1962 to 1964, and it became the new benchmark for covered hopper design. The PS-2CD 4000 featured a “low-side” design where the car sides cover most of the outlet bays. Most of the production included ten round hatches in the carbody roof for commodity loading, although some roads opted for trough hatches, one of the first such applications on a covered hopper. While most roads opted for gravity only outlet gates, some railroads opted for both gravity and pneumatic outlet gates. Contrast the 4000's “low-side” design with the later design found on our “sister” Pullman-Standard prototype model, the PS-2CD 4740 hopper, which included a “high-hip” design.
The earliest PS-2CD 4000 Hoppers were delivered from Pullman-Standard's Butler, PA manufacturing plant in March 1962, painted in NKP black. Pullman built roughly 2,000 copies of the PS-2CD 4000, with only minor detail and appliance changes along the way. The Tangent Scale Models replica will cover virtually all PS-2CD 4000 production changes through the 1962 to 1964 period.
