Over the years most railroads were unable to avoid rough times and eventually all but a few were forced into mergers and acquisitions to remain in operation. Lesser known but important railroads like the Texas & New Orleans, the Central Pacific, and the “Cotton Belt” for instance became part of the expanding rail lines of the Southern Pacific. Over time even the Southern Pacific railway was no exception to acquisition, as they became part of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1996.
