This 61’ bulkhead flat car is painted brown with white lettering and reporting marks. For many years one of Southern Pacific’s biggest traffic categories was lumber. In the 1960s, lumber began to be packaged with steel strapping and shipped on bulkhead flat cars. The first cars of this type were conventional flat cars that were converted and used for plasterboard service. Bulkheads from commercial builders soon became the standard.
