Kato - HO Scale - SD80-MAC CSX Transportation (CSX) ("Dark Future" Scheme) # 4594 (DCC Ready) (SKU 381-376348)

Available On: July 1, 2012

Prototype Information:

The SD80MAC is one of today's most powerful locomotives, seen throughout North America on Class I mainline railroads, weighing in at more than 400,000 pounds. With a length in excess of 80 feet, the SD80MAC is one of the heaviest and longest single diesel locomotive in the world. The SD80/90MAC series was introduced by EMD in late 1995. Conrail was the first railroad to receive the SD80MAC in early 1996. As it would turn out, Conrail would be the only original buyer of this locomotive, even purchasing both of the demonstrator units. CSX and Norfolk Southern have since acquired these units. The behemoth SD80MAC can generate up to 5,000 horsepower and has a maximum speed of the SD80MAC is 75 mph. It is equipped with the revolutionary radial truck, the EMD HTCR-II, capable of reducing the angle of wear between wheels and rail.

Model Features:

  • Largest and most detailed North American models ever produced by Kato.
  • Mechanisms will feature ''wired'' electrical pickup with powerful five-pole motor with dual brass flywheels.
  • All models are equipped with Bright White LED headlights, as well as KATO semi-automatic knuckle couplers and factory-installed DCC socket.
  • These models are also expected to have lighted front-end ditch lights, similar to those on their C44-9W models.
  • All models will include printed Numberboards, separate MU Hoses, and Windshield Wipers (modeler install).
  • 45'' Scale Wheels.
  • While these models may physically be capable of operating on a 18'' radius curve, it is recommended they be run on curves no smaller than a 22'' radius to prevent the appearance of unrealistic overhang and premature uncoupling. Larger radius curves will yield better operation of these massive models.
  • Modeling era: 1995 to present.
