Box cars have long been the mainstay of freight transport for the railroads. As time has passed, they have grown in both size and number. Today, they have been largely overshadowed by container and TOFC freight transport for large shipments. Even so, there are still many thousands in use and they are used to carry any number of items. Used by virtually every railroad and many private operators, the box car will be around as long as trains travel the rails.
