In 1923, the American Railway Association proposed a standard steel boxcar design. The boxcar was a good design, but was not universally adopted. Several railroads did adopt the design, with the PRR being largest of them. The cars in PRR service continued to be used into the 1970's with some remaining in work train service into the 1990's.
