During World War II the railroads faced tremendous challenges, along with the rest of the country. The massive increase in the movement of both people and supplies resulted in the need for additional rolling stock. At the same time, the supply of most metals was very limited for all but military uses. As a result, there were a number of cars that used wood or metal in their construction in unusual ways. This allowed the railroads to add the capacity they needed while providing modelers a unique period to model today.
