N Scale 40' "Bunktainer"
This easy to assemble kit can be used to model many variations of these "home away from home" for track forces. Some modelers may refer to these as "actos" however the aformentioned moniker is merely a brand name, as others were built by Star and "Prince" (Princecraft) and even some we don't know who built. To say just that there are alot a variations on these would be a huge understatement, window and door arrangements, 26"2" single occupancy units, all the way through to this size which could have many other exterior arrangements, and designations including; "office" "bunk" "recreation" and "laundry" are just a few. The model consists of a one piece body with cast in side door. Other doors, and windows with trim, and "drip strips" are included. Hydro plugs for each end, door lights, roof top vents and side vents. Antenna mount, decals, and pre-printed aluminum coloured window glass round out the kit. The first one built here, Although in HO Scale took approx 1 hour to complete, not including paint drying time. I did scar the paint above the door as you can see, and have yet to add the antenna and the handrails. The shoes fit with friction on the bunktainer ends and are glued to the flatcar, so it can be removed if needed. The N scale kit is identical to the HO one. There are no window openings (except for the side door) and to get the effect you get here you can mount the window casings first then open up the opening, or you can use the black decal blanks included. Apply them inside the casings, seal, then mount the pre-printed windows as shown above. The choice is yours. If you were to have a few mounted on flatcars, you can simulate the electrical conduit connector that runs from unit to unit, as well as running to either a generator ( stand alone or complete car)(conversion kits and parts coming soon) or connected to hydro at a lineside pole. There are plenty of photos on the net, as we found alot of these older ones in scrap yards and in the weirdest places. One good hunting ground was one of the tracks on the south side of the CN Belleville yard, however non are here today and the CN building that I believe used to service them is leased to a private company. There will be several variations built from these kits that will be posted, and we invite modelers to submit there own photos as well.
