A very common sight in several major metropolitan areas of North America, the combination of locomotive and passenger cars has proven to be very successful.

The EMD F59PHI was introduced in 1994 as an update to the already popular EMD F59PH, it has a restyled carbody cab and a 3200 horsepower EMD 710ES prime mover.

In 1975 Bombardier teamed with Toronto's GO Transit to design a bi-level commuter coach capable of carrying 130 passengers. Two years later, the first of these cars went into service. Today, several other commuter rail services use these cars as well.
