General Service Drop Bottom Gondolas were used to carry many bulk dry products, such as coal, gravel and scrap. Besides their use in paid service, they were often part of work trains where they carried the varied necessities of the job at hand. Several variations of this car existed and included both plywood/steel composites and steel versions in standard height and extended height.

This Southern Pacific version with it's raised sides was used extensively in the transport of sugar beets. It was also used for other products such as lemons, potatoes and wood chips from time to time. When in sugar beet service, it was not uncommon to see strings of 100 cars or more.
