Light and bulky wood chips requiresome of the biggest cars on the rails.These giant hoppers were introduced by Greenville Steel Car in the early 1970s. Standing just over 16' tall,
the big side walls cars require plenty of bracing for support, and distinctive embossed panels add rigidity to the car sides. In 2009, plenty are still in service on southern lines where wood chips are preferred over pulpwood as the primary raw material for making paper.
