Originally constructed for the Milwaukee Road's Hiawatha passenger trains, full-length Super Dome cars were operated by other railroads following the road's exit from passenger service.

Chessie System leased dome #58 from a private owner for use on its Chessie Safety Express excursion trains operated in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Although leased, the car was painted in Chessie System colors. The trains were powered by restored steam locos RDG #2101 and later by ex-C&O #614.
