An EMD GP (also known as a 'Dash 9' for short) is a 4-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1954 and August 1963. Thousands of examples of this locomotive model were built for American railroads. Power was provided by an EMD 567C 16-cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower. Many rebuilt GP-9s remain in service today with shortline railroads and industrial operators; some remain in rebuilt form on some major Class I railroads, or as switcher locomotives
