Description

The Southern Pacific with the Union Pacific Railroad developed a series of 60-ft arched-roof baggage-express cars under a common design standard. These were CS 214 and were classified as 60-B-1 through 8.

For some not known reason, Union Pacific apparently did not use the CS classifications and instead referred their Harriman baggage cars with their folio diagram numbers.

The first order 60-B-1 were built by Pullman in 1909. The last of the 60-B series with symmetrical doors were the 60-B-8 were built in 1918 by ACF. To further complicate car numberings, due to car assignment changes within the SP system (Pacific Lines with CP, SP, O&C numbers, Texas Lines with T&NO, ML&T and GH&SA) and a dissolved class of cars 60-BD-x that carried a turbo-generator, one has a remarkable variety of changes.

Wheels of Time cars will just give you a taste of the huge fleet that once roam the Espee and connecting lines.

These cars were 60-B-1 through 6 series had Globe vents on the roofs. All were with as-built doors.

The dark olive paint scheme and the repainted cars with the two-tone gray was quite common for SP trains.

?Star? baggage cars 6195 and 6400 have upgraded facilities for the express personal. Paint scheme are appropriate for June 1946 and onwards for just ?Southern Pacific? on the letterboard.

The two-tone was painted later. However, most dark olive cars were never repainted and held that scheme even in the ?60s.
