The E217 EMU was the first outer-urban train type with four doors per side on the car. It was introduced by East Japan Railway Company in 1994 to replace the 113 series EMU's running on Soobu line and Yokosuka line.

The cab design is unique, but the basic design was developed from the 209 series commuter EMU's
