The eighty-five foot flat car was introduced in the 1960s to accommodate the latest 40ΚΌ trailers that were just then being introduced to the nations
highways. Each flat car was set up to transport two of the trailers. Subsequently, these dedicated TOFC (trailer on flat car) flat cars became the defacto standard for intermodal service during this era.
