Coal hauling has become a very significant revenue generator for North American railroads. Whether these cars are railroad or utility owned, mile-long 110 car unit-trains can be seen on all major and some branch lines. Older coal cars are being re-built and newer, lighter aluminum cars are being added each month.

The majority of these 48' Modern Unit Train Coal Gondolas cars are manufactured by Johnstown America Corporation? (formerly Bethlehem Steel Car Company) under the trade name of Coalporter?. Production started in 1982 and these cars are still being manufactured today.

We have made two different styles - the 13-panel re-built steel cars made for Conrail and CSX and the 14-panel Aluminum cars made for the other railroads and utilities. A similar aluminum car is also made by the Thrall Manufacturing Company under the trade name of "MaxGon?".
