Detroit Edison, a subsidiary of DTE Energy, provides electric power to most of southeast Michigan. Much of the power comes from several coal-fired plants. About half of the Powder River coal used by Detroit Edison goes by rail to Superior, Wi., then by boat to the plants. Over 5 million tons of coal took this route in 2004. The other half of the coal is directly hauled to the plants by railroad. Detroit Edison has over 4,000 cars in service with DEEX reporting marks including Bethgons.
