As trucking took more and more business away from the railroads, they had to adapt their business to a changing world. Trucking could be more efficient and quicker in the "last mile" than railroads could be in many cases. This led to the development of Trailer On Flat Car (TOFC) operations that combined the best of both worlds. Today, transportation of over the road trailers by rail continues to be a strong part of railroading. These 28 ft trailers are perfect for modern operations and can be used with a variety of wheel cars, flat cars and spine cars. A variety of schemes can be combined to make a realistic TOFC consist, or a few may be added to mixed consists.
