The first release in this series, the three GATX Rail Canada Corporation (CGTX) 4-Packs are on in our warehouses now. We have only three copies of each 4-Pack still available for order. Modelers who have not previously ordered these, or who ordered some of the sets and want additional sets should order now to obtain any of the last few sets. Once they are gone, they are gone, just like our Procor Tank Car sets, which are now sold out. These sets are PWRS Exclusives and will never be produced again.

Petroleum production in North America is booming. Both the United States and Canada are now producing more oil and oil based products than they import. While production is up in many areas, the single greatest reason for the increased production is the Bakken rock formation oil deposits.

These oil deposits and held with in an area of nearly 200,000 square miles stretching through areas of Montana & North Dakota in the United States and  Saskatchewan and Manitoba in Canada.

While this formation and the oil within have been known for decades, large scale production was limited. It is only within the last 15 years that new techniques and technologies have allowed for the widespread development of these resources.

And while some of these techniques and technologies are controversial, hundreds of thousands of barrels oil are produced across this area daily. This had led to a railroading boom.

With so much oil to transport and with new pipelines facing financial, environmental and regulatory issues, railroads have stepped up to fill the gap. So much so, that many oil insiders feel new pipelines would be more expensive and less efficient than rail transport.

Large unit trains of petroleum tank cars are now a regular sight in the area and beyond. With unit trains traveling to refining centers in the southern and western United States, these trains are seen far away from the Bakken oil fields.

These trains are made up of cars operated by a variety of owners and travel over all the Class I railroads in the United States and Canada.

These trains offer an excellent modern prototype modeling opportunity. Unfortunately it has been nearly impossible to model these trains due to the lack of available models in sufficient numbers to accurately reflect the character of these trains.

The need to produce these cars became even more clear to us recently. On two recent trips to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, we were stuck by huge numbers of tank cars while rail fanning. Many modelers at recent shows have also expressed an interest in building petroleum tank car unit trains.

Pacific Western Rail Systems is proud to announce our PWRS Exclusive N Scale Micro-Trains North American Petroleum Tank Car Series. Over the next two years, we will release tank cars from a number of companies in varying schemes for each.

These 54 ft. 23,000 gallon cars, only available through PWRS will be sold in three 4-Packs. Each 4-Pack will features a different scheme. By combining cars from these releases modelers will be able to build a prototypically accurate consist of these cars as seen across Canada and the United States.
