Two New Books for BC Rail and SP Fans

Dear Customers: Monte Vista Publishing has just sent us cover shots of their two new books to be released in the next few months. Here are the details:

20 Years of BC Rail Vol one

Monte Vista recently re-thought the concept of MVP's diesel books and decided to eliminate the portrait style books and make all Monte Vista Publishing books in the Landscape format.  The BC Rail Book... has been totally rebuilt using 9x12 Landscape format as a basis.  

The first volume of 20 Years of BC Rail should go to press in December and be ready April 2009.  This first volume by Brian A. Elchlepp and myself will cover 1984 to 1988 in chronological order. 

The pages will be built just like our steam publications with individual engine information (Class, Model, builder and builder number(s) Build date and disposition information). 

Caption information at the bottom of the photo will have details about the train or consist and/or about the location.  

The photos will measure 11.5" wide by 6.75" tall all in full color The book will be hard cover 128 pages + a cover sheet and dust jacket    Retail price is estimated to be $65.00 US 


Book Steam through Tehachapi

Also being release in Late 2008: Steam through Tehachapi - Los Angeles to Woodford  San Joaquin Division series Volume One.  

144 pages hardbound black & white photos from the early 1930s to mid 1950s representing a geographical and chronological trip on Southern Pacific's San Joaquin Division.


Beginning at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal with the first departure of Train No. 51 -  the San Joaquin in 1939 the railroad west along the Los Angeles River
past SP's big LA Yard (Taylor) seeing some of the engines and trains a passenger could have seen during their travels.

Then continue west through Glendale and Burbank on to San Fernando and Sylmar through the mile long Tunnel 25 that separates the San Fernando Valley from the Newhall / Saugus area (now called Santa Clarita area) through Newhall and Saugus where many passenger and freight trains are seen including two different photos of Train No. 58, the Owl requiring the use of TWO Cab Forwards Double headed to get their spring and summer heavyweight trains of 17 and 21 cars, respectively over the route. Trains 51, 52, 56, 57, 58 and 60 are represented in the large 10.5" wide x 6.25" tall photos with a few taller images.  Several numbered freight trains are also well represented as well as many extras.


Through Soledad Canyon, and on to Palmdale, Lancaster, Rosamond and Mojave,  Between Mojave and Bakersfield Santa Fe Railway trains will also be seen
Between Soledad Canyon and Mojave there are five photos of early SP diesels found inside from four unit consists struggling with wet and icy conditions in unusual
snowfall in Southern California   to 2 month old F-3s coming downgrade into Mojave - Dynamic brakes howling! 

This first volume ends in Woodford just west of the Tehachapi Loop.  144 pages + plus cover sheet and full color watercolor paintings on the dust jacket.


Retail prince is expected to be $65.00  and should be ready to ship in December 2008.
