Introduced in 1993, the Dash 9-44CW was the last of General Electric's third generation of diesel locomotives and is powered by a 4400 horsepower prime mover. The Dash 9 came about in the ashes of the 6000 horsepower locomotive race where it was found that there could be too much power in one locomotive. It rides on HiAd trucks introduced with this model that use computer control to reduce wheel slip. The locomotive also features computerization of many of the controls and operations for increased efficiency and reduced operating costs. Many of the innovations on this locomotive carried over to its successor in the form of the General Electric GEVO locomotive series. These locomotives were produced until 2004 with more than 3600 built. Today, the vast majority remain in service.
